Sunday, September 4, 2011 Story provided by ABC 2 Baltimore:ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - It's a day that is etched in our mind forever. A day we will never forget, September 11th, 2001.The day America came under attack on American soil, using our own airliners as weapons against us. Carl and Jonathan McKlveen remember that day all to well. They were two of the first volunteer firefighters to arrive at the Pentagon after the attacks."I was a little upset coming over the 14th Street bridge. It's a sight I will never forget, seeing the smoke coming up over the Pentagon, looking over and knowing that we've been attacked," said Master Sgt. Carl McKlveen with the Maryland National Guard."It was just a scary feeling to see there was no traffic, but emergency services vehicles going to the Pentagon. The smoke billowing up was terrible. It really caught your eye," said Staff Sgt. Jonathan McKlveen, Maryland National Guard. On the tenth anniversary , the brothers are remembering that somber day at the Pentagon. It's a day that changed their lives."We went into the C wing to put the fire out and what really got me was seeing my fallen comrades and not being able to do our normal job, which is rescue. We are a rescue company to be told we cannot rescue someone or remove them. It got to me," said Jonathan.Carl and Jonathan are committed to serving their country, family and community. Both served in the military and work as volunteer firefighters. They are both in the Maryland National Guard. They are preparing to deploy for a year to the Middle East to continue to fight for Americas freedom."I signed on the dotted line to be in the military. I knew what could happen. I am just here to do a job for my country and protect my family," said Jonathan."I'm a soldier. I continue doing what I love to do. It has given me a broad horizon," said Carl. The brothers have come full circle on the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks after arriving on the scene at the Pentagon to help and now heading overseas to continue to fight and protect Americans so they never have to experience a scene like 9/11 again."I've always had the desire to serve the community. I did it with the fire department and military. It's my calling. I have always had a dedication to serve and that is what I am doing now," said Jonathan.Carl and Jonathan left for the Middle East for a year long deployment on September 1st.Read more: http://www.abc2news.com//dpp/news/region/harford_county/two-brothers-come-full-circle-in-their-service-after-the-9_11-terror-attacks#ixzz1X00fpR4A
Saturday, September 3, 2011 For the second time in less than 24 hours Rescue Squad 27 responded on a fatal motor vehicle accident in what is shaping up as an extremely deadly holiday weekend. Around 2200 hours Saturday night, units were dispatched to Brinkley Road in the area of Joyce Drive for a motor vehicle accident. Calls began flooding the 911 center in reference to the accident and how serious it was, forcing PSC to upgrade the Rescue Local to a full assignment adding Squad 27 on the run. The Squad arrived to find units on scene performing CPR on a Trauma Arrest victim that had been ejected from the vehicle. While no victim required extrication as the vehicle was peeled open during the impact, the Squad was put to work providing patient care to a Priority 1 patient in the rear of the vehicle. The total number of patients landed at 4 and the Squad quickly picked up and returned to service. As always the members of the MVFD extend their thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families involved in this accident.
Friday, September 2, 2011 Another busy Friday in the Suitland area included a variety of events... Around 1600 hrs. with the Engine Company Out Of Service for Change Over back to the "War Wagon" (272) the Rescue Squad was dispatched to the area of Webster Ln. and Noah Dr. for reported Building on Fire. Units from 32 arrived to find a single story, vacant, non-combustable school with Smoke Showing. Rescue Squad 27 arrived as the First Special Service and assumed the same going to work opening up for the Engine Companies, Searching, and running Lights and Fans. A fire was located in the middle of the building and quickly extinguished, the assignment was then scaled back to 2 Engines and 2 Trucks. Around 0330 hrs. a Rescue Local was sounded for a Motor Vehicle Accident with People Trapped in the area of Suitland Rd. and Stoney Meadow Drive. While enroute the units from 27 came across an abandoned auto on fire in the area of Suitland Rd. and Regency Park Court, Squad 27 requested an additional Engine to handle that and proceeded to the accident. Upon arrival the Units from Company 27 located a single vehicle accident with one person confirmed pinned. The vehicle had left the road and landed in the woods on it's side bent into a "U". Rescue Squad 27 went to work stabilizing the vehicle and removing the roof to gain access to the victim. Once the victim had been removed from the vehicle they were pronounced deceased on the scene by Medic 29. After searching the vehicle and the area confirming there were no other victims, the assignment was reduced to Squad and Ambulance 27 to standby for the Police and provide lighting. Units were on scene till 0645 hrs. before being released by the PGPD. The members of the Morningside VFD wish to extend their condolences to the victim and their family during this difficult time.
Thursday, September 1, 2011 At 2314 hrs., units responded with the 3rd Battalion Chief for a reported House Fire with People Trapped at 3089 Chester Grove Rd. in the Westphalia Woods community of Upper Marlboro. First arriving units reported heavy fire showing from the second floor of two units in a "quadplex" style building. Engine 27 was dispatched 3rd due on the call along with the Chief. After completing a split lay with E26 and securing a nearby hydrant, the crew from E27 then stretched a 200' 1" 3/4 attack line to side Charlie/Delta. Just as the crew from E27 attempted to make a push with their hoseline, a partial exterior wall collapse occurred on side Delta. With this and weakened floor conditions, command was forced to have PSC sound the evacuation tones, so that all personnel can be accounted for and regroup. A fire task force was requested bringing additional units to the scene. With the green light given by command to attempt another interior attack, the crews from E27, T29, and Chief 27 worked together on side Charlie and Delta to enter the upper floors of the Bravo exposure via ground ladders and work their way towards the fire building to quell the stubborn flames and open up the remaining interior walls and ceilings. With the bulk of the fire knocked and all personnel on the fireground accounted for after the partial collapse, command soon scaled back the incident holding Engine Companies 37, 26, and 27, along with Truck Companies 37 and 29. Engine Company and Chief 27 packed up and returned to service after logging in close to 3 hours of work.
Sunday, August 28, 2011 Rescue Squad 27 and Chief 27 A were dispatched to Thornfield Terr. for the report of a house on fire. Co 37 arrived with fire showing. Squad 27 arrived as the second special service and preformed those tasks. Chief 27 A had command. The Squad threw ladders on side C and preformed a secondary of the house. Units from 37 made a quick knock on the fire and command held 37 for overhaul.
Saturday, August 27, 2011 The crew from the Rescue Squad and Chief 27 A were dispatched to District Heights for a vehicle collision as the rains started to fall. While en-route Co. 29 went on scene of a street alarm with smoke showing and requested the box. The Squad cleared the accident which was property damage and was placed on the house fire assignment as the third due special service. Squad 27 arrived to find heavy smoke showing from all side and all floors of the 2 story single family. The crew assumed the RIT duties and was assigned by command to remove the bars from the windows and doors. As the officer was doing his 360 a flashover occurred sending several firefighters outside, some complaining of burns. The officer relayed this information to command and requested EMS to side Charlie. The crew assisted the injured firefighters while others continued to cut the bars. Command ordered an evac of the house and all units were pulled out to regroup. During the regroup Squad 27 was assigned to the basement division. The crew cut off a metal bar door that hindered access to the basement. Crews then proceeded inside and began a knock on the fire. With opposing hose lines crews were again forced out. After communication was worked out with all crews, Co 17,29, and 27 again made a push in the basement. Crews operated for 4 hours on this fire before being released. Chief 27A had basement division, and Side Charlie.
Saturday, August 27, 2011 Hurricane Irene struck the Metro DC area Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. This brought several calls for Co. 27. The Volunteers had two crews in service for the storm and the station had a dedicated ambulance crew. The company ran two working fires, several alarm bells, wires, transformers and other "locals." The town of Morningside had several trees down and a couple houses suffered serious damage. Fortunately no one was injured.
Storm coming in
Wednesday, August 24, 2011 At 2011 hrs., Engine Company 27 was dispatched to 5115 Suitland Rd. for alarm bells. Minutes after arriving on the scene of Suitland Rd. and silencing the bells, PSC alerted units to respond with the 3rd Battalion Chief for a report of a house on fire at 6008 South Hilmar Circle in Company 26's first due. Engine 27 quickly cleared Suitland Rd., and requested to run the call. Permission was soon granted from Battalion Chief 3 for Engine 27 to run the call and arrived on the scene and assumed second due engine company responsibilities. A second call to PSC advised a corrected address of 6010 South Hilmar Circle. Engine Company 26 arrived first on the scene in front of Battalion Chief 3 and Engine Company 27 and advised they had heavy fire showing from the second floor of 2-story, middle of the row townhouse. E27's crew advanced a 200' 1 3/4 attack line into the front of the structure, encountered fire conditions on the first floor and extinguished such. Due to poor radio reception on the fireground, command (BC3) had PSC sound the evacuation tones as a precaution in an effort to have all crews regroup, reevaluate the situation, and make a second attempt to smother the remainder of the flames. Engine 27's crew was then directed by command to extend their line into the Bravo exposure building to open up the walls and ceiling and hit hot spots. Engine Company 27 then packed up and was released by command after putting in close to two and a half hours worth of work at 2237 hrs.
