Tuesday, August 23, 2011  Crews throughout the metro region were rocked Tuesday with a powerful 5.9 Earthquake that struck near the DC metro area.  Station 27 put two crews in service and responded to several calls for service. Most notable were several gas leaks and two high-rise apartment buildings that were condemned.  


Squad 27 was dispatched to 3200 Blk of Curtis Drive for an 8 story apartment building which had major structural damage.  The crew was split into two groups, a search group and extract group.  The search group searched each apartment for anyone left behind and to document the damage.  The extract group stood fast ready to extract anyone found in the building.


At the same time Engine Co. 27 was sent to Good Hope Ave for similar conditions and assisted with evacuations.


   


 

1st Arriving Special In "The Heights"

Monday, August 22, 2011  Around 2000 hrs. PSC struck the Box for a reported House On Fire in the 1500 blk. of Nova Avenue bringing Rescue Squad 27 as the 3rd Due Special Service. The Squad responded quickly with 5 personnel consisting of career and volunteer live-in members. First arriving units discovered a 1.5 story wood frame, detached, single family home with smoke showing. Rescue Squad 27 was the first arriving Special Service and given the same responsibilities. The crew split into to two teams and went to work, ventilating, removing bars on side charlie, laddering the building, controlling utilities, conducting a primary search and opening up for the engine companies. The fire involved the basement and had extended to floors above. The stubborn fire was brought under control even with the radio systems numerous problems, forcing crews to provide to face to face updates with the command officer. Rescue Squad 27 operated for over two hours before clearing the fire ground. Squad Frees Another One

Saturday, August 20, 2011  Early this morning the Rescue Squad and the Ambulance were dispatched to the 4700 blk. of Allentown Road for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident. Units arrived to find a two vehicle accident on Allentown Road in the area of the exit ramp from the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway with one victim trapped in the drivers seat. The assignment was filled out while the Squad went to work removing the victim. The vehicle was originally a four door and part of the rear door had to be removed to even gain access to the drivers door. The extrication was completed quickly and the victim was turned over to awaiting EMS crews.

Firefighters Respond to SUV Into Camp Springs 7-11 Store

Just after 9:00 am today an SUV drove through the front doors of a Camp Springs convenience store causing considerable damage.  The driver believed the SUV was in "reverse"but when they pressed on the gas pedal, the SUV was actually in "drive" and surged forward through the front doors and into the counter of a 7-11 store in the 6400 block of Auth Road.  Fortunately, no one was injured.  A County Building Inspector will inspect the structural integrity of the store and the County Police are conducting an investigation.

Door Pop in Clinton

Wednesday, August 10, 2011  Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched for the vehicle collision at Pine View Ln and Woodyard Rd in Clinton.  Squad 27 was the first unit to arrive and found one patient trapped after a T- bone collision. The crew stabilized the vehicle and was able to extricate the patient in under 10 minutes.  The patient was transported to a local trauma center with non life threatening injuries.


     



 

Car Into A Building

Monday, August 8, 2011  After clearing an overturned vehicle Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched to the Giant Food store at Allentown Rd and Temple Hill Rd for the report of a vehicle that had crashed into the building.  Units from 32 and Squad 27 arrived to find a single vehicle that had indeed crashed into the building.  The squad crew secured and stabilized the vehicle then assisted with the injured patients.  The Rescue Squad cleared within an hour.


     



 

Roof Removal on the Beltway

Wednesday, August 3, 2011  For the second day in a row Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched to the Capital Beltway for a vehicle collision with entrapment.  Chief 27 arrived, confirmed the location and established command.  The first crews to arrive found an older model pick up truck on its side with the driver trapped inside.  The Squad arrived and stabilized the vehicle with struts, a come-along and cribbing. The Squad crew then cut the roof to gain access to the patient.  The patient was extricated within 10 minutes.


     



 

Squad runs "Tool Job" on the beltway

Tuesday, August 2, 2011 0630 hours Rescue Squad 27 was alerted for a accident with confirmed entrapment on the I/L 495 just South of the Ritchie Marlboro Road interchange.

With County Sheriff's on scene, PSC was able to get the assistance to the scene that was needed early before fire department units had even arrived.  Several Engine's, 2 Rescue Squad's and multiple EMS were dispatch on the initial.

Rescue Squad 27 arrived and began extricating patients out of a third vehicle.  Vehicle 1 and 2 had Priority 4 patients on their arrival.

The Squad Crew used Hurst Speaders, Cutters and Rams and various other tools.

The Squad operated on scene for about an hour before being released.

Working Fire in Boulevard Heights

Wednesday, July 27, 2011  Units from the 3rd and 1st battalions were dispatched to the 4200 Blk of Byers for the report of a house on fire.  Rescue Squad 27 and the Chief responded on the run.  Units arrived to find a working basement fire with fire showing from side D.   The Squad was the first arriving special service and was assigned such duties.  The crew split with the interior crew searching and opening up while the exterior crew threw ladders, ran lights, and cut debris and shrubs away from the basement windows for egress.  Chief 27 was assigned as interior.  Companies made a quick knock on the fire and were able to clear within 2 hours.

Wednesday, July 27, 2011  Rescue Squad and Chief 27 were alerted to a basement fire in the 4200 blk of Byers Street in the Boulevard Heights section of Capitol Heights.

E26, who was in the area on a drill, arrived first to find a 2 story single family home with smoke showing, reporting a working fire.

Rescue Squad arrived as the first arriving special and was assigned to Divison 1 by command to begin search and rescue operations, along with working with E26 opening up and checking for extension.

Chief 27 was assigned to Division 1.

The Rescue Squad cleared the scene in a little less that 2 hours.

No injuries were reported.

   


 

Engine and Chief Catch A Blaze In Oxon Hill

Tuesday, July 26, 2011  At 1912 Engine and Chief 27 were dispatched to the 7100 Blk of Abbington Dr. In Oxon Hill.  Engine Co 21 arrived to find smoke showing from a 1 story single family with a basement.  Units advised of a working fire on the first floor with extension.  Chief 27 was the next to arrived and assumed the Abbington command.  Engine Co 27 arrived as the 4th due engine, ensured the 3rd dues water supply, and stood by with a back up line.  The engine crew was then deployed to division 1 to knock hot spots.  Units cleared within an hour.


     



 

Squad and Ambulance Get Caught In A Mini Riot

Saturday, July 23, 2011  Rescue Squad and Ambulance 27 were dispatched for the injured person after an assault.  While staging and waiting for police a group of over 200 teens ran into the street around the squad and began fighting.  County police advised there were injured subjects in a "secure" area just down the street.  Crews from 27 made it to the staging area with county police and were able to assist one patient who had been beaten and stomped. While tending to the patient the crowd came back and again began to fight.  More police officers arrived and chased the crowd off using cars, tasers, and batons. The crew from 27 cleared after about 45 minutes.

Small Fire in District Heights

Saturday, July 23, 2011  Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched to the 3000 Blk of Lakehurst Ave for the report of smoke coming from the roof.  Chief 26 arrived and confirmed a working fire on the upper level of the 2 story house.  Rescue Squad 27 was the first arriving special service and  began to open up and search before being reassigned to RIT.  Units were able to make a quick knock and units cleared within 90 minutes.


     



 

Squad Runs House Fire In Capitol Heights

Wednesday, July 20, 2011  Shortly after 0200 hrs. a Box Alarm was transmitted for a reported House On Fire in the 900 blk. of Elfin Avenue, bringing Rescue Squad 27 and the "B" Chief. First arriving units found a two story, single family, wood frame, detached home that had been evacuated with smoke on the #2 Floor. Chief 27B was assigned Division II while the Squad assumed the Third Due Special Service responsibilities. After an extensive search a fire was located in the attic area of the home and quickly extinguished. Units operated for over 2 hours before picking up and returning to service.

Squad Extricates K9

Friday, July 15, 2011  While the crew was drilling communications rang the red phone asking about a service call.  A local resident had their dog with its head stuck in its crate.  Squad 27 proceeded to the residence and found the dog with its head stuck in a small void where the crate had failed.  The crew was unable to pull the dogs head back through because of the sharp metal edges which were angled enough to piece the dogs neck.  The family members held the dog as the squad crew carefully cut the metal pieces away and freed the dog.


     



 

Squad Free's Two On "The Pike"

Thursday, July 7, 2011  Story Courtesy of PGFDFIRE.com Around 1:30 Thursday morning Engine 26 (District Heights ) along with Rescue Squad 27 (Morningside) and several EMS units were dispatched to the 6600 block of Marlboro Pike in District Heights for a reported motor vehicle accident with people trapped. First arriving units reported a car into a tree with four people injured, two trapped. Firefighters from Rescue Squad 27 was able to free the two trapped victims within 10 minutes, two other were able to exit the car prior to units arriving on the scene. The two injured people were transported to a local trauma center with serious condition. The cause of the accident is under investigation

Mid-Afternoon Blaze in Camp Springs

Sunday, July 3, 2011 14:46 A mid-afternoon blaze brought in units from three separate battalions on a steamy hot Sunday afternoon. At 1446, units were dispatched to 4506 Lujean La. in Camp Springs for a reported house on fire. First arriving Engine Co. 32 reported heavy fire showing from the Alpha-Bravo corner of a one-story, single family, with a basement. Engine 27 responded 3rd due on the run with a total of 5 volunteers. After laying out and establishing a secondary water supply, the crew ran the 250' pre-connect to side charlie, to check for fire spread, and initiate a primary search of the kitchen, and basement area which both turned up negative. Engine 32 and Truck 29 then made quick work of the fire after determining that it was a room and contents off on the Alpha/Bravo quadrant of the home. E27's crew then redirected their line to side Bravo and assisted with opening up the exterior walls, removing vinyl siding, and extinguishing hot spots. One firefighter from Co. 25 was transported to an area hospital suffering from back pain. With the bulk of the fire knocked, command scaled back the incident holding E32, 25, TK29, & TK26. Engine company 27 racked up close to 600' of supply line, before returning to service 3 hours later.





   


 

Motor Vehicle Accident with Trauma

Sunday, July 3, 2011  After taking in a house fire in Camp Springs and running several local alarms for wires down and outside fires in, Rescue Squad and Ambulance 27 wrapped up this busy Sunday with a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Suitland Pkwy. at Forestville Rd. Upon arriving on the scene, crews encountered a private ambulance crew initiating patient care on the most seriously injured patient, which turned out to be a priority 1 trauma. With their assistance, the Rescue Squad and Ambulance packaged up the patient for transport and turned patient care over to Medic 29, who arrived shortly after. The patient was transported to a local trauma center via Medic 29 and Ambulance 27, and Rescue Squad 27 cleared the scene approximately 30 minutes later.


   


 

Engine Runs Second Due to Fire in 29's Local

Saturday, July 2, 2011 15:56 Units with the 3rd Battalion Chief were alerted to a fire in a famous local "Rib Joint" located at 3443 Branch Ave. in Co. 29's box alarm area. Engine 29 arrived first on scene and initially reported nothing evident. Upon further investigation, E29 found a small fire emitting from the exterior wall of side "Bravo", and began to make its way up the interior void spaces of the walls into the cokcloft and soffet area.  Exterior crews encountered heavy fire conditions in the cockloft area, shortly after opening the roof. E27 was then directed by command to extend a 200' 1" 3/4 attack line into the structure and assist E29 with opening up the walls, ceiling, exposing and extinguishing hidden pockets of fire in the cockloft area. After an extensive overhaul and with  the fire deemed under control, command (BC883) held E29, E26, TK37, & TK32 and remaining units were placed in service. E27 cleared the scene after putting in close to 2 hours worth of work.


     



 

Door Pop on the Beltway

Thursday, June 30, 2011  Units were dispatched to the Inner-Loop of the Capital Beltway in the area of Allentown Rd for a vehicle collision.  the Southern Safety Officer arrived to find the crash on the ramp to Forestville Rd, advising he had one into the woods with one trapped.


Squad 27 arrived and stabilized the vehicle before removing the passenger side door to remove the patient.  The patient was packaged and carried out to awaiting EMS units. The squad cleared within 15 minutes.
