This Time The Rescue Squad Goes To A Fire

Saturday, January 21, 2012  Around 2000 hrs. calls began flooding into the Prince Georges County 911 center reporting Fire Coming From a House in the area of the 7900 blk. of East Barrett Road. Being that the fire was only a short distance from Company 21's quarters, they quickly arrived to find a two story, wood frame, detached single family home with fire throughout the home and showing through the roof.

Rescue Squad 27 was dispatched as the third Special Service and arrived as the second. Chief 27 also responded on the call and was the Incident Commander.  After a quick exterior attack the bulk of the fire was knocked down and crews were able to enter the home.  Once the incident was brought under control the long drawn out process of overhaul and controlling hot spots was completed before returning units.  This was the third fire in less than 30 hrs. for Company 27.

Engine Company Goes To Back To Back Fires

Friday, January 20, 2012  Minutes before 1600 hrs. a Box Alarm was transmitted for a reported House On Fire in the 7200 blk. of Mount Forest Terrace in Company 23's First Due.  Engine Company 27 arrived as the Second Due Engine Company, laid out and positioned out of the means of access and advanced a line into the structure which was heavily involved upon arrival. After an initial push, with conditions deteriorating and the structure beginning to partially collapse, crews were pulled out and a defensive attack was launched.  Once the fire was brought under control again, crews re-entered the structure lead by Chief 27 and finished extinguishing the stubborn fire.

Approximately 15 minutes after Engine Company 27 returned to quarters, they were dispatched to another structure fire in the 4700 blk. of Colonel Ashton Place which is in Company 20's Local Alarm Area.  First arriving units discovered a three story, end of the row, town home with fire showing from around the chimney area.  It was discovered that a fire had traveled the walls of the second and third floor and extended to the attic of the home.  Engine Company 27 was fourth due and directed to perform a primary and secondary search as the Special Services were committed to opening up. Once the Searches were complete Company 27 was redeployed to Division II to open up.  Units operated for over an hour before returning to service.  These two calls set the pace for another busy weekend at Company 27.

MVFD Receives Assistance to Firefighters Grant for 2011

Friday, January 13, 2012  The Morningside Volunteer Fire Department is excited to announce that we have been awarded another Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA.  This Grant is to replace and modernize most of the aging equipment on Rescue Squad 27.  With fund raising being a consistent challenge and the demand for service continuing to rise, this Grant will allow us to reduce our annual maintenance costs while ensuring the equipment will be available and ready for all emergency responses.

Thank you to all our supporters both internal and external of the Department. During the Award Announcement the MVFD was recognized for it's continual efforts to receive outside funding, as with this grant we have received over $700,000 in assistance since the year 2000.

If you want to be apart of a progressive organization that is constantly on the forefront and responding to a high demand for service, look no further.  Contact the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department Recruitment email at Recruitment27@MorningsideVFD27.com

Strong Show of Support to Honor One of Our Fallen Brothers

Thursday, January 12, 2012  "Where were you 20 years ago?" A quote from PGFD Fire Chief Marc Bashoor, who also served as career captain at Morningside.

Tonight, the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department held a memorial service to honor fallen firefighter and friend, Kenneth Michael "Kenny" Hedrick, who on this very day 20 years ago made the supreme sacrifice while operating on a first due house fire at 3807 Walls La. in Suitland on January 12, 1992.

The service began with the presentation of colors by the PGFD Honor Guard followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Prince George's Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Chaplian Harry Hetz then blessed the ceremony and recited scripture readings. The event was attended by several members of the Hedrick family, anchored by Kenny's parents Les & Cathy Hedrick, who are active members with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, where they both serve as counselors to families of other fallen firefighters throughout the Country. While speaking together at the podium, they both thanked everyone for attending the ceremony, where Cathy was quoted "The last twenty years would not have been possible without the support of the fire service family." Also in attendance were several PGFD officials, including Fire Chief Marc Bashoor, Morningside Town dignitaries, and a who's who list of many current and former members of the MVFD who all shared several stories about Kenny with our newer members.

Current MVFD life members, brothers Carl & Jonathan McKlveen, who are both currently deployed to Afghanistan, also attended the ceremony via Skype. The McKlveen's were able to interact online with the many visitors and members that attended the service who wished for their speedy and safe return back to the States. The service then concluded outside at the Memorial Monument dedicated to Kenny with bagpipes and prayers.

A very special thanks goes out to Les & Cathy Hedrick for inviting us into their lives once again to honor and remember Kenny. Special thanks to Morningside Fire Chief Michael J. White and President David Hansen for organizing a truly memorable ceremony, and a special thanks to Kentland Fire Chief Tony Kelleher and the crew of Rescue Engine 33 for filling the station so that our members can partake in the ceremony.

Kenny's legacy continues to serve as an inspiration to the members of Morningside, both old and new. We love you and miss you Kenny.

Tuesday, December 27, 2011  Shortly after 1900 hrs. Communications dropped the box assignment for 13400 Dillie Dr. in Upper Marlboro at the County Correctional Facility. This alarm brought Rescue Squad 27 as the 3rd due special service. Crews encountered a small fire in the facility's laundry room with heavy smoke conditions filling the hallway and into the sally port. Once the flames were knocked, the Squad crew went to work with the help of both truck companies, and removed the smoke from the building via the sally port entrance using a combination of both positive and negative pressure ventilation. Command soon released the remainder of the assignment, holding the first two engines and all three special services. Rescue Squad 27 was back on the road an hour later.
